Abstract

Osteoporosis, known as a silent epidemic, has led the medical community to prioritize early diagnosis and apply available treatments as part of a collective effort to address this common disease. Ultrasound technique has begun to be used as a method for bone density evaluation. In this work, an electroacoustic device “Bone Radar” has been developed as an alternative to osteoporosis diagnostic. The acoustic signal transmission of the device was confirmed by the addition of commercial components and appropriate features regarding maintenance and operation. The calibration stage results showed a relationship between the parameters of acoustic intensity and the density of the samples. The validation stage of the device has been established in patients with suspected osteoporosis. The data presented lead to the conclusion that, at the moment, the Bone Radar can distinguish between patients who have osteoporosis in their lumbar and hip vertebrae and subjects hose bone density falls within the ranges typical of health. Progress has been made in the direction of establishing a new technique that can be used in clinical for early diagnosis of osteoporosis.
